The Eroica di Montalcino is a non-competitive historic cycling route that offers participants a defined path to explore the history and territory of Montalcino. The initiative was born in 1997 thanks to cycling enthusiast Giancarlo Brocci, with the dual purpose of preserving the region's iconic white roads and promoting socialization while showcasing the local area. Brocci was inspired by the cycling of the past, characterized by values such as effort, heroism, and sportsmanship.

Regulations

To participate in the event, you must have a vintage-style or heroic bicycle. In addition to the unconventional mode of transport, the rules also require cycling attire in line with past eras. The Eroica di Montalcino consists of five routes, mainly differentiated by the length of the journey, and registration fees vary according to the options chosen. Registration includes several perks, such as access to refreshment points, the route map, a booklet for marking route stamps, shower services, and a celebratory end-of-ride party. Those without bicycles can rent one before the event begins. To participate, entrants must provide a medical certificate of physical fitness at the time of registration.

Routes

The Eroica di Montalcino consists of five different routes, varying in difficulty and distance. Here's a brief overview:

Heroic Walk

The route is approximately 27 km long and is designed for families with children who want to admire the beauty of the territory and the Brunello di Montalcino.

Brunello Route

This route is about 46 km long, perfect for those who don’t wish to complete the full course but still want to experience the most important stops. The route is half on white roads and half on asphalt.

Medium Crete Senesi Route

Covering approximately 70 km, this path traverses Castiglion del Bosco. It is aimed at those who wish to test their endurance and is slightly more challenging than the Brunello route but equally rewarding.

Medium Val d’Orcia Route

With a distance of about 96 km, this path is tailored for trained cyclists. This tour around the Val d'Orcia includes several climbs, making it unsuitable for beginners.

Heroic Long Route

Spanning approximately 153 km, the name already describes the journey. This route covers the entire Val d'Orcia and UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is designed for the most experienced and well-prepared cyclists. There will be seven refreshment points along the way to allow participants to rest and replenish for the next stage.

Festival a Montalcino

The Eroica Festival

The Eroica di Montalcino is not just a race but a true open-air festival, dominated by whimsical initiatives and playful events. The historic center of Montalcino will be transformed into a festive hub hosting activities such as a competition for the most heroic beard and mustache and an award for the shop with the most beautiful display inspired by heroic wine glasses.

Visitors can enjoy good wine, shop in local stores, and browse the heroic market filled with event-themed gadgets and souvenirs.

The Eroica is truly a promotional event for the region, bringing joy and fun to participants of all ages and leaving them in awe of Tuscany and the territory of Montalcino.
