For nature lovers, a visit to one of the most beautiful spots in Tuscany is an absolute must; situated between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto lies the Monte Amiata, which was once a volcano, now dormant for a long time. This is an area that can be visited all year round because, depending on the season, it offers breathtaking landscapes: in spring and summer, you can take relaxing walks through the greenery, while in winter, it’s covered in white and perfect for skiing enthusiasts, as well as for those who are less experienced and just want to enjoy a snowy adventure.

Discovering Monte Amiata

Monte Amiata is easily accessible from all the towns in the Val d'Orcia surrounding it; the connections are good, and various means of transport can be used. Once you reach your destination, you can leave your car in a large parking lot to get to the summit. Nature lovers should not miss out on one of the trails through the various natural parks and protected reserves in the area; there are as many as 19 different trails that can be easily traveled on foot, on horseback, or by bike. Monte Amiata is not only about nature but also culture. In fact, at the summit, there are several points of interest that attract thousands of curious tourists every year.

The Metal Cross

Monte Amiata's summit can be reached by cable car. Once you reach the top, you won't miss the enormous Metal Cross towering imposingly over the entire area. This is a relatively old monument that replaced the original one destroyed during World War II. Beneath it lies one of the most beautiful observation points on the entire mountain, offering a view of the whole valley. A short distance away, you can also admire the Madonna degli Scout, made of marble and placed atop granite stones. Food enthusiasts have nothing to worry about because it’s well-known that after a lovely walk, it’s essential to refuel. At the summit, you’ll find several spots offering typical Tuscan dishes, accompanied by a glass of fine wine.

The Dante's Rock

Tuscany is the birthplace of one of the greatest poets in history, Dante Alighieri, and even his homeland seems to have paid him homage. A few kilometers from Abbadia San Salvatore, you can see a rock that perfectly reproduces the profile of this great man, unmistakable for anything else. It is not a work created by some enthusiast but sculpted naturally over time.

Monte Amiata in Winter

Monte Amiata is an excellent choice even in winter for all ski enthusiasts and beyond. The area is well-equipped with various ski lifts, dedicated slopes, and predetermined trails for those who prefer walks in the snow to skiing. At high altitudes, you can stop at one of the shelters for a warm, delicious meal. Reaching the facilities is very easy: simply take the provincial road of Monte Amiata, which is well-marked by various signs. Once there, you can decide which of the two facilities to start from: the Grosseto side or the Siena side.
